To observe World Health Day, a CME Programme on ‘Save Lives – make hospital safe in emergency’ was organized at ASCOMS, Jammu on 7-4-2009 which was attended by the students and the faculty members. Dr.Pawan Katwal (Divisional Commissioner, Jammu) was the Chief Guest, Dr.V.K.Gandotra Director Principal ASCOMS chaired the CME.
Dr.Ran Bhshan Singh Project Coordination UEVRP UNDP spoke on the topic of Radiological disasters Newer challenges. He warned about possibility of accidental or deliberate release of radioactive material in the community with immediate and delayed side effects and discussed the measures to deal with such a situation including the hospital preparedness and safety of the hospital workers.
Dr.Nirupama Madan, Deputy Medical Suprintendent, Govt. Hospital Gandhi Nagar Jammu deliberated on the ‘Seismic safety in the hospitals’. She gave details about the safety of structural and non structural components in the hospitals and the explained the danger which may affect the safety and the patients thrugh radioactive material and the radiation equipment leakages during in the hospitals.
Dr.S.S.Soodan Director Medical ASCOMS talked about the present uncertain scenario and implication of nuclear proliferation which may lead to result immediate effects and delayed pollution of environment including land, water and air around us. So far, there is no known prevention and cure for such radiation trauma and it can affect the future generation through genetic mutations. He cautioned about the possibility of small nuclear weapon called dirty bombs falling in the hands of terrorists and other criminal elements.
The IDPD publication Black Magic of Uranium at Jadugoda was distributed to the audience and the recent press reports of traces of uranium affecting population in the neighbouring state of Punjab were discussed.
