Doctors and Medical Students from Srinagar and Jammu demand abolition of Nuclear weapons, substantial reduction in small arms and diversion of funds towards health, education and overall development. The Indian Doctors of Peace and Development (IDPD) an affiliate of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) – Recipient of Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 organisied seminar at ASCOMS Jammu and at SKIMS Srinagar on the theme “Peace, Health and Development”. Large number of faculty members and students participated in the seminars at both places. Addressing the seminar Dr.Arun Mitra – National General Secretary said that over 27000 nuclear weapons present on this earth can annihilate the world more that 12 times. South East Asia which is among lowest in human index is spending huge amount on arms race. It is imperative that we put in efforts to resolve conflicts and pending issues through mutual dialogue. Dr.S.S.Soodan – Vice President IPDPD and Director Medical ASCOMS explained the effects of violence on health, hospital and community. He stressed the need for healthcare exchange programmes and medical tourism with Pakistan as a part of confidence building measures. Dr.G.M.Malik, present IDPD – J & K state pointed about the sufferings of the people of this region as a result of violence in the state. Effort have to be put in to ease the situation through dialogue and public awareness. The Director of SKIMS Dr.A.H.Zargar while lauding the role of IDPD in promoting peace highlighted the role of doctors during the ongoing militancy. Dr.V.M.Dogra, Principal ASCOMS addressed the seminar at Jammu Dr.Abid, Ms.Sehrish and Mr.Sohail, Medical Student representatives of IDPD – J & K chapter organized student session in which 10 students presented their view points on various issues related to war, violence and health. Dr.Yasmeen, Dr.Ankita and Dr.Zafar Abbas judged the students’ presentations. Students and doctors at both places decided to participate effectively in the forthcoming 18th World Congress of IPPNW to be held in March 2008 in New Delhi which will be inaugurated by the President of India.
