North Eastern medicos resolve to campaign for peace and disarmament

Doctors and medical students from the states of Manipur, Sikkim and Assam resolved to campaign for Peace and Disarmament so that wasteful expenditure being incurred on arms race is diverted towards health, education and overall development of the society. Meetings to the effect were held is Imphal and Guwahati on 16th and 17th September 2007. Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) Manipur Chapter organized a meeting on 16th September at Imphal in the Babina Diagnostic Centre under the chairmanship of Dr S N Prasad. Dr M.Nara Singh – Vice President IDPD gave a detailed account of the organisation and achievements of doctors movement for peace, health and development under the aegis of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) since 1980 and since 1984 in India. Dr Arun Mitra - General Secretary IDPD while delivering a note of emerging challenges before the peace movement in the present day scenario, informed the august gathering that IDPD has decided to organize 18th World Congress of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) at Delhi in March 2008. The medical fraternity of Manipur assured that they would participate in big number in the world congress. Leading members of medical fraternity who participated in the meeting include Dr.Th.Biren Singh, Dr.Ksh Chourjit Singh, Dr.Th.Dhaboli, Dr.M.Modhumangol, Dr.Motilal Singh, Dr.Bijoy Singh, Dr.Ksh Manglem Singh, Dr.Y.Mohan Singh, Dr.Renubala Devi, Dr.Sadhna Devi, Dr.P.Khogen Singh, Dr.H.Tamba Singh, Dr.Yaima Singh, Dr.M.Nl Singh, Dr.Borojao Singh-MLA and a leading social activists Sh.Amrik Singh Pahwa. They decided to soon hold a seminar in regional Institute of Medical Sciences Imphal.

On the morning of 17th September 2007 a meeting of the young doctors and medical students from Sikkim was held. Dr.Ms.Nedup Bhutia, Mr.Mohonish N Chhetri and M.A.Rohan Sapkota took initiative to organize the meeting at the P.G.Ladies Hostel. They decided to form formal unit in Sikkim and also to participate in the world congress.

In the afternoon on 17th September medical students and young doctors of Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati held meeting in the academic hall of the college. Meeting was addressed by Dr.Arun Mitra and Dr.M.Nara Singh. They formed a 26 member committee as IDPD Assam students wing. An executive body of 7 members with Dr.Gaurang Saikia as President and Sushant Aggrwal as General Secretary. Other members included Vikrant Singh Bhar and Abhinandan Logadu as vice presidents Mr.Chinmoy Dutta and Md.Wasim Irfan as joint secretaries and Manjit Das as treasurer. They decided to participate in the world congress in an effective manner.
