A sensitizing seminar for MBBS students was organized at the Government Medical College Nashik on 6th December 2025 by the Department of Pharmacology on ‘Genesis of IPPNW, IDPD & Role of Medical Professionals in Abolition of Nuclear Weapons’.  Major Dr. Jeetendra Singh, Professor & Head, Pharmacology department and Secretary Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) was the main speaker.  He highlighted that medical professionals are the first responders to health consequences of war, violence, and nuclear disasters. Organizations such as International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW)—a Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1985)—and Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) work globally and nationally to prevent nuclear conflict, promote peace, and advocate for disarmament.

 

The objective of the session was To introduce students to IPPNW and IDPD activities, To sensitize them to the catastrophic health consequences of nuclear weapons, To motivate them to explore humanitarian and peace-building roles as medical students, To promote student participation in national and global IPPNW activities.

 

The session covered the following key areas:

 

Overview of IPPNW, its foundation, mission, global structure, Nobel Peace Prize recognition

Genesis of IDPD (India Chapter)         Indian physicians role in advocacy, campaigns & partnerships

Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons, Health effects, emergency response challenges, system collapse, Medical Ethics & Disarmament          Peace as a public health priority, Student Opportunities with IPPNW          Conferences, exchanges, peace activism, global network.

 

Real-world examples from Hiroshima & Nagasaki survivors' data and ongoing global disarmament efforts were also highlighted.

 

 

The students demonstrated keen attention and interactions with questions on Nuclear treaties & global security, India’s role in disarmament, How youth can influence peace-building. 76 students participated in the seminar.

 

Output & Outcomes

Increased awareness about nuclear disarmament as a medical responsibility, Encouraged volunteer sign-ups for IPPNW Student Network, Initiated discussion about forming a Student Wing of IDPD at GMC Nashik, Students expressed motivation to participate in academic activities like: Global IPPNW Congresses, Peace education events, Public health awareness campaigns.

 

Feedback received from students was positive and appreciative. They acknowledged the importance of this broader humanitarian dimension of medical practice and welcomed more such sessions.

 

Dr Jeetendra thanked Dean, GMC Nashik for unwavering support. He appreciated Medical Education Unit & Student Council for coordination, Faculty and student volunteers for active participation for their cooperation. 

 

Future Plan

Establishment of an IPPNW–GMC Nashik Student Chapter, Regular sensitization programs & participation in global campaigns,  Observance of Hiroshima Day, Peace Day & Anti-War Awareness events.
